At the 2012 Benefits and Pension Summit for Benefits Canada, Dee Edington, director of the University of Michigan Health Management Research Center, recommends that companies not only focus on wellness initiatives for those at high risk for major diseases (smoking, overweight, etc.) but to pay attention to their healthiest employees who can become champions for a culture of wellness amongst their fellow co-workers. 60% of employees are at low risk of major diseases and most corporations do nothing for these low-risk employees.

When we started doing employee wellness seminars at companies, we started seeing a trend in the attendees. They were mostly healthy people who wanted to stay healthy or get even healthier and manage stressors better. They were interested in mindfulness, healthy eating, fitness, tips for maintaining overall good health, stress management and disease prevention. When we do repeat seminars at the same company, we see the familiar faces of previous attendees, but many of them have also brought a friend – a co-worker who may be less healthy who they are encouraging to live a healthier lifestyle. We have seen these champions and how they lead change to create a wellness culture both for their own personal lives but also for the company as a whole.

Eating healthy doesn’t have to be difficult, expensive, or time-consuming. In this session, learn tips on healthy snacks and lunches that are quick and easy to make for the office.
