GET THE FACTS….

You are contagious 1-2 days before you start showing symptoms and up to a week after

You can spread it to others up to 6 feet away.

Flu viruses in droplets (like from a sneeze) can live in the air for hours

Flu viruses in droplets survive even longer in colder temperatures

Flu viruses can live on hard objects for up to 48 hours (think: phones, keyboards, doorknobs, countertops, toys)

Flu viruses can live on porous objects for up to 8 to 12 hours (think: clothing, tissues, paper)

Flu viruses can live on hands for only 5 minutes – but what are you touching in those 5 minutes?

Kill the flu virus with: soaps, hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, chlorine and commercial germicides

You can also kill the flu virus with heat, but it has to be above 167 degrees. So you can kill it in a dishwasher, but not with handwashing in hot water alone.

Bottom line, do these 3 things to stop spreading the flu:

1. Cover your mouth with your sleeve or a tissue when you sneeze or cough

2. Wash hands with soap, or use alcohol-based hand sanitizer to prevent

3. Do the above 2 things even if you are not sick or around people who are sick. Because ANYONE can be contagious!
